Abstract
This study explores the school experiences and educational support needs of students with Tourette Syndrome (TS) by conducting in-depth interviews with adults who were diagnosed during their school years. Five participants were selected, and the data were analyzed using MAXQDA through coding and thematic analysis. The findings reveal the following: First, students with TS faced disadvantages in class participation and written assessments due to their tics, experienced social isolation in relationships with peers and teachers, and encountered various challenges in daily life. Second, overcoming these challenges required not only individual effort but also collective support from peers and teachers, appropriate school accommodations, and strong parental involvement. Third, despite these efforts, inadequate institutional support discouraged students from seeking help, and some educational accommodations were misunderstood as preferential treatment. Additionally, persistent tics led to physical fatigue and chronic stress, contributing to feelings of frustration. Fourth, students expressed the need for educational support in several areas, including academic assistance, test accommodations, awareness programs, consideration for special education eligibility, and administrative and financial support. In particular, while academic support was recognized as essential, concerns about potential reverse discrimination highlighted the need for stakeholder consensus. Frequently requested accommodations included extended testing time and scribing support. The study also emphasizes the need for teacher training and awareness programs to foster a more inclusive school environment. Participants held differing views on whether TS should qualify for special education services, with some expressing opposition to special education placement. There was also a clear demand for practical administrative and financial support. This study enhances understanding of students with TS and offers a foundation for developing meaningful educational support strategies.
