Abstract
This study investigates the parenting experiences, educational support practices, and perceived support needs among parents of students with borderline intellectual functioning in elementary, middle, and high schools. To address these objectives, in-depth interviews lasting approximately one hour were conducted with 15 parents. The data were analyzed using the constant comparative method, resulting in the identification of three overarching categories, seven subcategories, and 20 key themes. First, the category “Parenting Experiences at Home for Parents of Children with Borderline Intellectual Functioning” comprises two subcategories: “Emotional and Psychological Challenges Experienced by Parents” and “Children’s Delayed Development and Behavioral Characteristics.” Second, the category “Parental Perceptions of Educational Support for Children with Borderline Intellectual Functioning” includes two subcategories: “Experiences of In-School Educational Support” and “Experiences of Support from Community and Private Organizations.” Third, the category “Support Needs and Expectations for Children with Borderline Intellectual Functioning and Their Families” is delineated into three subcategories: “Demand for Customized Educational Interventions for Children,” “Demand for Emotional and Informational Support for Parents,” and “Demand for Policy-Level Support.” The findings provide valuable insights for developing comprehensive policy and educational interventions designed to enhance support systems for students with borderline intellectual functioning and their families.
