Abstract
The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of a lifestyle training program through modeling on the social skills development of children with Autistic Disorder. The investigator sampled three students (one girl, two boys) attending a special elementary school in Joennam, applying an A-B-C design through a pre- and post-test and administering a total of five sessions with a session for every six sessions in a 30-session program. The results were analyzed in a pre- and post- test in the A-B-C design, and the significance level based on mean differences between pre- and post-test results was put to the t-test. First, the study examined the effects of a lifestyle training program through modeling and found that the students improved by 2.035 on a 5-point scale from a mean rating of 1.630 in the pre-test to a mean rating of 3.665 in the post-test across 20 items related to communication and interpersonal relationships. These results demonstrate that the program was effective. Secondly, the lifestyle training program through modeling also had other effects as the students increased their mean rating in social skills training related to interpersonal relationships from 1.60 in the pre-test to 3.87 in the post-test. That is, there was an improvement of about 2 points (2.27) on a 5-point scale, which shows that the program was very effective for children with mild Autistic Disorder. First, the lifestyle training program through modeling was effective for the interpersonal relationship development of children with Autistic Disorder. Second, the lifestyle training program through modeling was also effective for the communication development of children with Autistic Disorder. Finally, interpersonal relationship functioning had more positive effects on the social skills development of children with Autistic Disorder than communication functioning in the lifestyle training program through modeling administered in the study.
