Abstract
The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of aquatic psychomotorik intervention on speech and language in children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), to provide foundational data, and to promote the implementation of aquatic psychomotorik programs in practice. A total of six children with ASD participated in the intervention, which was conducted over 16 weeks, with one session per week. The intervention consisted of an aquatic psychomotorik program. To assess the effects on speech and language, articulation, intelligibility, receptive language, and expressive language were evaluated before and after the intervention. The results were analyzed using paired-sample t-tests with the jamovi software. The findings are as follows: First, there was a statistically significant difference in articulation scores before and after the intervention. Second, a statistically significant improvement was found in intelligibility scores. Third, receptive language scores also showed a statistically significant increase. Fourth, expressive language scores significantly improved post-intervention. These results indicate that aquatic psychomotorik intervention had a meaningful impact on the speech and language abilities of children with ASD. Considering the common oral motor difficulties in children with ASD, which often lead to speech and language development delays, the intervention provided through aquatic psychomotorik activities—which naturally incorporate breathing training—offers valuable implications for language development from a new perspective. Finally, this study anticipates that the developed aquatic psychomotorik program will be actively utilized in field settings.
