Abstract
The aim of this article is to investigate Calvin's view on the relationship between forgiveness and the imputation of righteousness. Based on Calvin's commentary on Heb. 7: 26-27 and 1 Jn. 2:6, Clifford maintains that for Calvin, justification is forgiveness as the result of the imputation of Christ's passive obedience to the Law, while His active obedience is not imputed but suggested as a model for saints, which is the qualification and preposition to be the spotless Priest and sacrifice. On the contrary, Fesko said that for Calvin, forgiveness is the result of the imputation of righteousness. But in his commentary on Rom. 3:21, 31 and Institution 3.11.2 Calvin referred to justification as forgiveness as well as the imputation of Christ's active obedience. Therefore, Clifford is not totally correct and Fesko's logic is not perfect. To our surprise, the biblical passages Berkhof and Bavinck suggested as the ground of the imputation of Christ's active obedience are not congruent with Calvin's commentary thereon. In this respect, they seem to have developed a reformed doctrine of justification beyond Calvin or to have scholasticized Calvin's view rather excessively. Nevertheless, their view that we are adopted as the result of Christ's active obedience can be supported by Calvin's commentary on Gal. 4:4-7. There is no hymn referring to the imputation of Christ's righteousness while there are numerous hymns referring to Jesus' blood in our hymnal. Jesus' obedience is emphasized only in relation to our discipleship. Generally, our sermons on justification have stressed Jesus' blood rather than His obedience counted as our obedience. Accordingly, considering that Calvin referred to justification as the imputation of righteousness as well as forgiveness, Calvinists need to preach, teach and compose.
