Abstract

This paper studies upon on the recent Catholic mission theology from the writings of Catholic missiologist standing in the fire front, not from the Vatican II documents, and criticizes it in light of evangelical perspectives. Stephen Bevans SVD, who was recognized in Korea through his well known book, Constants in the Context, is selected. His ecclesiology, christology, meaning of Gospel and kingdom of God, and relationship with other religions are major topics to explore the influence to Catholic missiology. The writer uses a metaphor of salad bowl in explaining Bevans’ missiology. He takes all kinds of mission concepts from various theological groups, put them into a bowl, and mixes them with special dressing source. Typology of Justo L. Gonzalez, Cuban American church historian, and Dorothee Sölle, German liberation/feminist theologian, is applied to add some tastes. Bevans presents type A, B, and C theology. He includes all missiological issues of these three types of theology in his concept of mission; witness and proclamation, liturgy, prayer, contemplation, justice, peace and integrity of creation, interreligious dialogue, inculturation, and reconciliation. Bevans notes his preference which places on B and C type theology. Prophetic dialogue stands for the characteristics of these two types of theology. The core of Bevans’ ecclesiology is that the church is “missionary by its very nature.” It implies that the point of the church is not the church itself, same to basic concept of missio dei. His christology centers round on a trinitarian understanding. which means to avoid a focus on Christ only. It places emphasis on communion-in-mission. Also Bevans interprets the Gospel as the proclamation of the kingdom or reign of God. Evangelization means an endeavor to realize the complete liberation. In interreligious relationship, he insists clearly that the Holy Spirit is working even among the other religions. This means that sincere practitioners of other religion have already participated in some way in the “paschal mystery of Jesus Christ.” The weaknesses of Catholic mission theology reflected from Bevans’ missiology could be understood in the weaknesses of B type and C type theology. B type theology could be occupied easily by philosophy and culture. It could be fall into the relativism. C type theology fails to notice personal sins, and focuses only on structural sins. Too much optimistic view on human beings is fatal weakness of this theology. Catholic missiology today goes together Missio Dei movement and jointly owns the weakness and strength of it.
