Abstract

As advocators of the “New Perspective on Paul,” D. G. Dunn and Thomas Wright assert that Luther’s discovery of the doctrine of Justification has distorted the truth and has blinded the church for centuries. They claim that justification is a future event that will occur at the final judgment. Their assumption is based on the view that God’s righteousness is actually God’s faithfulness to his covenanted people. God accepts his people without convicting people’s sins by his law. They maintain that God forgives those who believe of gospel message. However, when people believe in Christ, justification does not happen immediately. Instead, they will be justified at the final judgment. Their theory comes from a new understanding of first century Judaism. In their theological hypothesis, they actually deny the conviction of sin by the Holy Spirit, leaving no room for true repentance by the means of the Law. Moreover, they do not see the Law as a schoolmaster to lead sinners to Christ. Their understanding of repentance is very superficial. Therefore, they perceive that sinners can be received by believing of gospel message, without repentance. In addition, they claim that the law is a mere badge of the covenanted people. Thus, there is no principle or means for sanctification. They denounce Luther as antinomian, but they follow antinomianism by omitting the role of the Law for thesanctification of the believer. One of the aims of the New Perspective on Paul is to bring about unity among all the different churches. Wright mentions in his writings, his Anglican theological father, Richard Hooker, who argued that before the Reformation, in the Roman Catholic Church, there were people saved even without knowing the doctrine of justification. Wright supports Richard Hooker’s stress on the necessity of Protestants uniting with the Roman Catholic Church. The proponents of the New Perspective on Paul want to break down the barrier doctrine of justification that Luther emphasized. As a result of their premises, they reject cardinal gospel doctrines.
