Abstract

This paper is trying to find out the change of justice-discours in political ethics of Nicholas Wolterstorff, attempting a chronological study to his the- ology through justice-theory. Based on justice as inherent rights, Wolterstoff’s theory of justice requires Christians to protect the rights of the abused and exploited people in the world. Wolterstorff embraces the perspective of liberation theology and discourses on justice according Neo-Calvinism. He hereby emphasizes the possibility of just peace, just love, and just justification. He makes clear that individual spirituality and transformation of the world are not in conflicts by reinterpreting the early Calvinism as world-formative Christianity and accepting the critical mind of the liberation theology. He highlights the vision of shalom-peace, which achieves justice in shalom, by understanding that liberation theology and Neo-Calvinism are complementary. He also reinterprets the problem of pov- erty in terms of Shalom, emphasizing that Christians should take the lead in ensuring the rights of the poor who the rights to life are not adequately guaranteed, because of social oppression and exploitation. The concept of justice as a right-not to be abused appears more elaborately and clearly in the 21st century. According Wolterstorff, justice as inherent rights should be pursued rather than justice as right order, because primary justice has its basis in theism. He also presents Eirenism as the moral vision of the Bible by reinterpreting the shalom of the Old Testament in connection with the good that contributes positively to the well-being and prosperity of the individual. Since well-being and prosperity are social, a true shalom can not exist so long as there are the abusing and the abused. He therefore argues against Benevolence-Agapism which understands justice and love as confrontation, and for Care-Agapism which interprets agape not as be- nevolence but as care. On a continuous line, just justification is emphasized.
