(Matthew’s Use of the Old Testament)은 그의 급진적인 구약 사용으로 인해 그 해석의 난해함에 있어 악명이 높다. (The Use of the Old Testament in the New)과 구약의 구약 사용(The Use of the Old Testament in the Old)

Abstract

Matthew’s use of Hos 11:1 has provoked discussion among many biblical scholars. It is natural to observe the ambiguity in Matthew’s use of Hosea, because these two texts refer to two different objectives employing the same announcement, “Out of Egypt I called my son.” In the midst of these exe- getical difficulties, one of the hermeneutical problems in understanding Matthew’s use of Hos 11:1 is that a number of scholars focus on the book of Exodus rather than the book of Hosea. It is important, however, to recog- nize the hermeneutical significance of the Hosean tradition rather than that of the Exodus tradition, since Matthew cites not from the Exodus text but from the Hosean text. This paper argues that Hosea and Matthew share the same hermeneutical method by which they use the earlier redemptive- historical motif as a hermeneutical device to interpret their current historical and theological situations. I will first examine Hos 11:1 in its literary con- text and delve into the hermeneutical significance of Hosea’s use of the Exodus motif. I will also analyze Matt 2:15 in its narrative context and investigate the hermeneutics of Matthew’s use of the Exodus motif. As a result of this study, it will be argued that Hosea and Matthew share the same hermeneutics of inner-biblical exegesis in their use of the Holy Scripture.
