Abstract
The purpose of this article is to apply a rigorous methodology to the study of Matthew’s use of the Old Testament. In biblical scholarship, the research of the use of the Old Testament in the Gospel of Matthew, known as a notoriously difficult reading of Scripture, has not been treated with a robust methodological framework. This article argues that the complex nature of Matthew’s use of the Old Testament can be understood in light of new methodological insights. Translation theory is a useful tool to examine the New Testament writers’ use of Scripture, due to the fact that the way they employ a passage from the Old Testament is similar to the translation process in which a translator provides a translation from a source text to a target text. In this respect, the theory of interpretation of the use of the Old Testament in the Gospel of Matthew can be informed by the theory and method of translation.
