Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to examine Clark Pinnock, one of the most influential, controversial comtemporary theologians and his openness theology. Having briefly described Pinnock’s theological journey in his life and books, the paper presents Pinnock’s hermeneutics in approaching his theology. His interpretative methods are various kinds such as the using risk and non-risk models; love as the control text of his theological work, and the literal interpretation on anthropomorphic passages. The key issue on Clark Pinnock’s openness theology is that the theology denies exhaustive divine foreknowledge concerning the free choices of humans. He appeals biblically to the Old and New Testament passages that traditionally been interpreted as containing anthropomorphic language. Seeking a literal sense to these text, Pinnock argues that God faces a partial open future. Philosophically, he has primarily focused on the nature of human freedom and the problems of evil. Theologically,Pinnock raises a questions on God’s attributes of the traditional theism such as omnipotence, immutability and eternality of God and reconstruct the doctrine of God. Finally, the paper gives a critique of Pinnock’s denial of God’s foreknowledge of free choices of moral being. His open theism undermines serious theological implications such as the redefining God, the undermining unfailing God’s purpose, plan, providence, a risk of the fulfillment of divine predictions.
