본 연구의 목적은 미국신학계에 큰 파문을 일으키며 새로운 신관을 제시한 그레고리 보이드(Gregory Boyd)의 『가능성의 하나님』 (God of the Possible)을 살펴보고 신학적인 비판을 하는데 있다. 베델대학교의 신학교수이자 잘 알려진 저술가이자 미네소타주에 소재한 우드랜드교회의 담임목사인 보이드는 전통적 신론의 예지하심을 부인하고, 하나님은 과거와 현재는 완전히 아시나 미래는 부분적으로 알 수 없다고 하는 새로운 신관, 열린신학을 주창하였다. 보이드는 성경적, 철학적, 그리고 실천적인 관점을 통해 하나님은 미래를 정확히 알 수 없다고 주장하고 있다. 보이드는 전통적으로 신인동형동성형으로 이해했던 성경구절들이 하나님과의 인격적 관계를 분명하게 들어내므로 문자적인 해석을 해야 한다고 보았다. 철학적으로 보이드는 인간의 자유의지를 열린 신학의 원동력으로 삼았으며, 인간의 자유의지가 행사되기 이전에는 하나님조차도 미래에 관한 것은 알 수 있는 것이 아무것도 없다고 주장한다. 실천적인 측면에서 보이드는 열린 관점의 하나님은 전통적인 신관에 비하여 더 지성적인 설득력, 보다 역동적인 신앙생활, 도덕적 책임감 그리고 악의 문제에 대한 대처가 더 효과적이라고 보았다. 이에 대한 신학적인 비판으로 다음과 같이 제시하였다. 『가능성의 하나님』에 나타난 신론은 기독교 역사 속에서 견고하게 믿어 왔던 하나님의 예지하심과 충돌하고 있으며, 성경에 나타난 인간의 자유의지가 행사되는 예언과 성취, 하나님의 계획과 목적을 폄하한다. 그리고 인간의 자유의지를 포함하는 하나님의 섭리를 기대할 수 없게 하며, 하나님의 모든 속성을 수정하게 만드는 신학이다. 결과적으로 인간을 신격화하고 하나님은 인간화하므로 하나님의 영광을 크게 손상하는 신학에 해당하므로 심각한 오류를 지닌 신학이며 이단적인 신학이라고 볼 수 있다.
Abstract
The purpose of this study is to review and theologically criticize Gregory Boyd's book “The God of the Possible” which caused a great stir in the American theological world by presenting a new view of God. As a Bethel University professor, an accomplished author, and senior pastor of Woodland Church in Minnesota, Boyd denied the foreknowledge of God in traditional theology and boldly contended that God knows past and present exhaustively, but the future is partly known to God. In his book, Boyd contends that God cannot accurately know the future. Biblically, despite the verses being traditionally understood as anthropomorphic, Boyd contends that a literal interpretation is necessary because the Bible verses clearly reveal the personal relationship with God. Philosophically, he presents human free will as the driving force of openness theology. He claims that nothing, not even God, can know until human free will is exercised. In terms of practice, Boyd contends that God, with an open perspective, had more intellectual persuasion, a more dynamic life of faith, moral responsibility, and more effective coping with the problem of evil than the traditional view of God. As a theological critique of the “God of the Possible,” the book denied God's foreknowledge which has been firmly believed in Christian history. It makes it impossible to fulfill prophecies of human free will in the Bible, and to fulfill God's plan, purpose, and providence. Moreover, it makes all of God's attributes modified. As a result, it is a theology that greatly damages the glory of God by deifying humans and humanizing God. Therefore, openness theology in "the God of the Possible" is a theology with serious errors and can even be viewed as heretical.
