Abstract

Romans 7:14-25 is one of the most controversial passages in the New Testament. Numerous significant New Testament scholars have argued that Paul describes pre-Christian experience in this passage. Many other scholars, however, have suggested that Paul describes Christian experience here. The position supported in this article is that Paul depicts Christian experience in Romans 7:14-25 using his own experience. It is most natural to see “I” in this passage as Paul, the Christian sender of Romans. In Romans when Paul uses “I,” it refers to Paul himself. Some other evidences can be presented for this position: the shift from “we” to “I” in 7:14 implies that Paul includes Roman Christians in “I”;The shift to the present tense in 7:14-25 signifies that Paul describes his current experience; Paul considers Gentile Christians to be under the Law;the tension between mind and flesh can be explained by the concept of the ‘already-but not yet’; Paul and Christians exist between the two epoches of Adam and Christ in reality despite their having been released from sin and Law; 7:14-25 anticipates Christian victory in Romans 8. In conclusion this article encourages Korean preachers to preach Romans 7:14-25 in terms of Christian experience. Paul confesses his inability to keep the law in this passage. However, that is not the end of the story. He believes that he will not be condemned for his failure since he is in Christ Jesus(8:1). The Holy Spirit helps Christians follow the will of God when they rely on the power of the Holy Spirit in Christ. So, Paul says “thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord!” in 7:25.
