Using Scripture (See Louw 1998) as the distinctive communicative medium in pastoral care presumes a therapeutic dimension: that salvation has a very specific therapeutic impact on human behaviour. A further assumption is that salvation is communicated and revealed by the scriptural text, within the context of the pastoral encounter. If pastors are going to be able to generate hope in God’s promises and to edify the person concerned, then they must be able to interpret life issues in the light of the Word of God and the Word of God in the light of life issues. This endeavour faces pastoral care with the challenge of biblical counselling and the application of God’s promises to problematic situations.
