Abstract
This study analyzed domestic research trends on social and emotional learning (SEL) interventions for students with disabilities and those at risk for emotional and behavioral disorders, and examined the qualitative characteristics of these programs focusing on social-emotional competencies and the SAFE (Sequenced, Active, Focused, Explicit) design criteria. A total of 14 peer-reviewed journal articles published in Korea between 2015 and 2024 were reviewed. The participants ranged from early childhood to high school students, with most studies targeting elementary school students and those with intellectual disabilities. Although the studies addressed a wide range of disability types—including students at risk for emotional and behavioral disorders, autism spectrum disorder, and developmental delays—research involving middle school or early childhood populations was relatively limited. Most studies incorporated all five core competencies suggested by CASEL (self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationship skills, and responsible decision-making). In addition, three studies that selectively focused on specific competencies according to participants’ developmental levels or educational goals also reported positive outcomes. Regarding the structural design of SEL programs, 11 studies met all four SAFE criteria. While all programs included the Active component, several lacked sufficient elements of Sequenced instruction, Focused practice, and Explicit skill teaching. This study provides foundational evidence for effective SEL intervention design for students with disabilities and those at risk, and suggests practical directions for enhancing both program diversity and structural integrity in future implementation.
