Abstract
The purpose of this study is to analyze the trends, characteristics, and effects of school-based social-emotional learning (SEL) programs in South Korea by reviewing 27 experimental studies published in domestic academic journals between 2014 and 2024. This study aims to identify practical strategies for implementing SEL programs in Korean educational settings and to suggest directions for future research and practice. The studies primarily focused on elementary school students, with a predominant emphasis on children without disabilities. The most commonly used research design was the pretest-posttest control group design, and most programs were implemented once a week for fewer than 20 sessions. Universal interventions were the most common, and programs were more often delivered collaboratively than individually. Programs were categorized into curriculum-linked (e.g., moral education, music, art) and independent types (e.g., Strong Kids, Mindful Practice). However, many studies lacked verification of intervention fidelity and social validity, and teacher training or family involvement was limited. The analysis of the effects of SEL programs showed that, although there were some differences depending on participants’ disability status or individual characteristics, overall, statistically significant improvements were observed in social-emotional competencies, social skills, emotional regulation, and academic-related abilities.
