Abstract
In Joshua 9 the Gibeonites’ deception story is located within the context of Israel’s conquest wars against Canaanites. Gibeonites deceived the Israelites, succeeded in making a treaty with Israelites, and eventually were incorporated into Israel as their ‘servants,’ even though their deception was discovered. According to many scholars, this text emphasizes that Israel was deceived by the Gibeonites because of their carelessness not to ask the LORD, thus violating the ‘law of Herem(destruction).’ However, many literary features of Joshua 9, its literary structure, context, comparison with the stories of Rahab and Achan show that the story of Gibeonites has differ- ent theological intention. This text, especially in the words of the Gibeonites(9:9-10, 24), emphasizes that even though they signed a peace treaty with Israel by cheating, even the deception was an expression of their faith in Yahweh and the desperation to keep their life. Even the fact that Israel did not pray to Yahweh in verse 14 seems as a process of helping the Gibeonites to join Israel. In Israel’s decision accepting Gibeonites as their ‘servants’ they did not break the order of Herem, even though they made the decision without full understanding of the order. Although the Gibeonites lived in the land of Canaan, they should be excluded from the destruction because they wanted to be incorporated with Israelites through their right faith in Yahweh. This is the same example with that of Rahab and her family. The case of the Gibeonites, in contrast with the hostile attitudes of the Canaanite nations in Joshua 10, also serve to inform that there was a way of survival to the other Canaanites. The Gibeonites’ story gives a clue to the correct attitude of the Korean Church to the multicultural society mainly formed by foreign workers and married immigrant women who came to Korea due to their desperate need for survival. Korean church- es must keep their holiness from various absurdities and sins which multi- cultural society could bring about, as the Herem law implies. At the same time, they must be able to proclaim the Gospel clearly, to welcome foreign- ers, and to provide a community where people of diverse cultures experi- ence a family in God so that foreigners in Korea can freely come and live the true life under God’s name.
