Abstract
This thesis is an ecological interpretation of the dietary law of Leviticus 11. In Chapter 1, it was argued that the church is also responsible as a member of society for the ecological crisis facing modern society, and that an ecological reading of the Bible is necessary to solve this problem. In Chapter 2, I analyzed the structure and content of Leviticus 11:1-23. And I introduced various interpretations of the food law, such as arbitrary inter- pretation, allegorical interpretation, ritual interpretation, hygienic inter- pretation, anthropological interpretation, and ethical interpretation. And I have summarized these interpretations into three categories as follows. First, the dietary law is based on Israel’s worldview and legal system. Second, the dietary law is a way of life that reveals that Israel is God’s holy people. Third, limiting the number of animals that can be eaten in the dietary law implies respect for life. In Chapter 3, I looked at the theological implications of the dietary in the Old and New Testaments. I explained that the Old Testament meaning of the the dietary law was linked to the prohibition of bloodshed and that tthe dietary law was a sign that Israel was God’s people. It was also explained that limiting the number of animals that can be eaten has implications for suppressing meat consumption and thereby protecting various animal species. And in the New Testament, the distinction between clean and unclean animals was lost due to the Cornelius incident, and it was explained that all animals are good in the sight of God. In Chapter 4, an ecological interpretation of the dietary law was made based on the theological interpretation. First, the question of what to eat is a matter of faith. Second, the dietary law implies the suppression of hu- man desires. Because the current ecological crisis is the result of human greed. Third, I argued that humans should strive for the protection of various species because all animals are ontologically valuable. In conclusion, eco- logical bible reading is a very necessary task for the church to fulfill the stewardship mission of managing the earth.
