Abstract

The purpose of this study is to diagnose bipolar symptoms based on the Christian pathological system and suggest therapeutic implications. Bipolar symptoms have been mainly understood from a psychiatric perspective, mainly in terms of neurophysiological, psychorelational, and sociocultural approaches. This approach allows us to understand the complex characteristics and causes of bipolar symptoms, which do not have a single biological marker, from various aspects, and helps individuals suffering from the symptoms to live stably and adaptively. However, despite these contributions, the psychiatric approach has limitations in that it is based on a materialistic worldview and fails to address the spiritual aspects of bipolar symptoms and the problem of sin. Christian pathology is a useful diagnostic tool for overcoming the limitations of the psychiatric approach and understanding bipolar symptoms under a biblical worldview. Christian pathology diagnoses bipolar symptoms by dividing them into the categories of sin, disability and illness, and suffering. The treatment of sin in bipolar symptoms addresses the fact that the problem of symptoms is fundamentally a problem of sin. In the category of disability and illness, it critically accepts psychiatric findings on bipolar symptoms, but understands the dynamics in which bipolar symptoms are expressed and worsened due to a broken relationship with God. In addition, we understand the reality of the physical, psychological, and social suffering caused by bipolar symptoms, and that suffering is also a result of sin. This understanding implies that complete recovery from bipolar symptoms can be achieved through the practice of Christiformity.
