Abstract

This study explores modern psychological approaches to trauma and their limitations, and proposes a Christian psychopathology of trauma. The variety of contemporary views on trauma in modern psychology can be largely categorized in three approaches: neurobiological, psychosocial, and sociocultural approaches. Each one emphasizes different aspects and contributes a valid approach to trauma. However, all three approaches presuppose a naturalistic worldview that negates a spiritual reality, thereby they cannot provide an ethicospiritual perspective from a Christian standpoint. This paper argues that Christian psychology approaches trauma based on the primary authority of the Bible, while also actively participating in a dialectical communication with the legitimate discoveries of modern psychology. and therefore it can provide a more biblical and a more comprehensive understanding than the other views.
