Abstract

This study intends: to examine the post-sports paradigm centering on the technologies; to suggest the ways to accommodate technologies in sports by means of reflective and deliberative process; and to present the role of the philosophy of sports conducive to that process. What emerges in this coming age of technologies is the demand to deconstruct the current paradigm, replacing it with the post-sports paradigm because its meanings and aims withered away. Alternative paradigm appears to be predicated on two major premises: 1) technology is constitutive of sports because without its interventions there would be no sports; and 2) as technologies contribute to expanding the rights of access and choice in sports, and, thereby, ensure emancipation and equality, it is the function of technologies to defines the meanings and aims of sports. #1 is rejected because it amounts to an erosion of the agenthood of the human individuals. Granted the request to reestablish the meanings and aims of sports, #2 has serious pitfalls as it cannot take into account the ambivalence involved in the dissemination of technologies. Alternative paradigm cannot sufficiently demonstrate its validity. Taking the challenge of technologies seriously, this study illustrates two ways to search the shared meanings and aims of sports. First way is, based on MacIntyre's substantive proposal, to understand sports as social practices and to investigate its internal goods embedded in sports tradition. Second way is to introduce Habermas' procedural model of communication and to attempt to forge consensus. Despite some differences, both proposals interpret sports as social practices, converging into the intersubjective communication for the reconstruction of the shared meanings and aims. An institutional and practical philosophy, philosophy of sports should intervene in formulating and reformulating viable modes of communication. For that capacity building, philosophy of sports is supposed to try inter-disciplinary studies along with other academic fields involved in technology researches. What is especially required in those studies is the attitude of reflection-in-action.
