본고는 헤게모니주의자들이 사회의 지배와 이데올로기가 복합적이고 모순적인 성격의 스포츠에 관련되는 방식을 어떻게 해석하고 설명했는지를 탐색하고 그들의 스포츠이론을 비판적으로 평가하고자 한다. 본 논문의 목적은 헤게모니주의자들에 의해서 주장된 스포츠이론의 타당성 여부를 비평함으로써 스포츠문화 연구에 대한 하나의 개념적 근거를 마련하는 데 있다. 이를 위해, 먼저 헤게모니 스포츠이론의 대표적인 학자라 할 수 있는 Gruneau와 Hargreaves의 저작들을 분석함으로써 헤게모니 스포츠이론의 주요 주장에 대하여 고찰하고자 한다. 다음으로, 헤게모니 스포츠이론의 이론적 정합성을 검토하고 헤게모니 스포츠이론의 개념적 문제점을 지적하고자 한다. 특히, 헤게모니 스포츠이론은 복잡한 사회적 구조를 정당히 평가하지 못하고 스포츠의 사회적 관습을 스포츠의 사회적 제도와 혼동함으로써 불안한 인식론적, 규범적 기반 위에 서 있음을 논증하고자 한다. 끝으로, 오늘날 여전히 자본의 지배 헤게모니가 관철되고 있는 신자유주의 체제에서 헤게모니 스포츠이론이 현대스포츠문화의 특징이나 경향을 설명하는 데 있어 갖는 함의를 파악하고자 한다.
Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to explore how hegemonists analyzed sports that is deeply intertwined with social dominance and ideology. In examining the hegemony theory of sport, this paper hopes to enlarge the field of cultural studies of sports. This paper begins with an analysis of Gruneau’s and Hargreaves’ major work to see main arguments of the hegemony theory of sport. Then, my paper criticizes the theoretical consistency of the hegemony theory of sport and points out conceptual problems of the theory. Particularly, my paper attempts to show that hegemony sport theory has conceptual problems that can be traced to the shaky epistemological and normative grounds on which it rests because it fails to do justice to the manifold social constitution of sport and conflates the social practice of sport with its institutionalization. This paper concludes with a reconsideration of the fruitful ways that the hegemony theory of sport can be used for a better understanding of today’s sport culture, which is still dominated by the capitalist logic of cultural industry and the pursuit of interest.
