Abstract
The purpose of this study is to critically read Pierre de Coubertin’s Olympism from the theoretical perspective of post/colonialism. For this aim, two concepts such as ‘Eurocentrism’ as a geography-centered ontology and ‘whiteness’ as a racialized epistemology are utilized as crucial concepts through which critically interpret the way Coubertin conceptualizes Olympism as a cultural project in which Eurocentric mindset and white supremacy are embedded. To be more specific, this paper explores Coubertin’s Eurocentric view embedded in his essays and writings about Olympism in terms of its definitions, principles, purpose, values, and so on. About the nature of Olympism, many scholars have argued that Coubertin established Olympism as a philosophical ethos based upon Hellenism, Humanism, athleticism, internationalism, and cosmopolitanism. In this paper, however, I claim, following a group of scholars who deconstruct Olympism from various aspects of critical insights, that all of such values can be also interpreted as a sign by which his historical philosophy is deeply rooted in Eurocentrism and whiteness prevailed in the modern European society. As a conclusion, it is discussed why Eurocentrism is problematic and how we critically take away its diverse issues in relation to understanding sport world history from the post/colonial perspective.
