스포츠와 인종 연구의 방향성에 대한 시론

초록

이 연구는 인종 관련 국내 스포츠 인문·사회과학 연구들의 현황을 정리/분석하고, 나아가 ‘스포츠와 인종’의 주제 혹은 이슈를 왜 그리고 어떻게 연구할 필요가 있는지에 대한 방향성을 제언한다. 필자의 주장은 스포츠를 인종의 아이디어와 연관해서 탐구하는 한국의 스포츠 인문·사회과학적 연구가 ‘스포츠에서의 인종 연구’를 넘어 ‘스포츠와 인종(관계) 연구’로 확장될 필요가 있다는 것이다. 구체적으로, 스포츠현상 혹은 이슈들을 인종 관계적 측면에서 바라보는 것을 통해 문제화하는 것, 스포츠 현상에 흐르고 있는 인종 관계의 양상을 동화의 프레임으로만 재단하지 않는 섬세한 감수성, 스포츠와 인종의 관계를 긍정/부정적 영향의 이분법적 관계로 재단하는 것이 아니라 상호 주체적으로 영향을 주고받으면서 형성/구성되는 관계로 파악하는 것, 스포츠는 인종 문제를 분리/차별에서 통합/평등으로 발전시키는데 기여한다는 지배적 믿음(혹은 이데올로기)를 성찰적으로 향유하는 것 등이 그 방향성의 요지이다. 이러한 방향성을 실천하는 구체적인 방법 및 대안으로 필자가 제언하는 것은 네 가지이다. 세계 속의 한국 스포츠가 인종 관계의 측면에서 재현되는 양상을 분석/해석하는 연구를 진행하는 것, 인종 관련 (글로벌)지식 생산의 흑백 패러다임을 탈 중심화하는 데 개입하는 것, 우리 안에 존재하는 인종적 타자의 스포츠에만 초점을 두는 것을 벗어나 ‘한국성’과 ‘한국적인 것’이 형성/구성되는 방식을 비판적으로 성찰하는 것, 그리고 자문화주의를 바르게 이해하고 검토하는 것 등이다.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to explore the implication of the study of sport & race on the field of Korean society for sport humanity and socal sciences with focus on the issues of why it is needed and how to practice it in the context of Korean socio-cultural history and the sporting reality. To this end, this paper discusses mainly three things. First, I review how Korean scholars have engaged in investigating the issue of race in relation to sports, mapping it with three types of research: 1) historical researches that introduce racial issues in American sports, 2) representation-centered researches that focus on how the Korean media describe and portray the racialized other in Korean context, and 3) a group of researches that deal with the issue of race in connection with the idea of multiculturalism. Second, it is detailed why I frame such types of researches as the study of race in sport, what the study of sport & race is about, and why it is promising for the Korean academic community of sport humanity and socal sciences. Third, I lay out critical reflection on how to practice the study of sport & race in the context of Korean sporting history and reality in relation to such issues as representation, imperialism, colonialism, Koreanness, ethnocultural centrism, and so on.
