본 논문의 목적은 미국의 현대무용에 나타난 동양사상과 동양무술의 영향을 연구하는 데 있다. 이와 같은 연구를 위하여, 본 논문은 미국의 현대무용가들, 즉 Ruth Saint Denis와 Martha Graham, Merce Cunningham과 Erick Hawkins 그리고 Steve Paxton 등을 집중적으로 조명하면서 동양사상 및 동양무술의 영향을 고찰할 것이다. 유명한 현대무용가인 Isadora Duncan의 영향 아래, 미국의 현대 무용가들은 무용에 있어서의 자유와 자연적 정신을 강조하였다. Ruth Saint Denis의 동양적 무용, 선불교를 사용하는 Merce Cunningham의 무용, 그리고 동양무술인 아이키도를 사용하는 Steve Paxton의 무용은 모두 동양사상과 동양무술의 영향을 받고 있는 것이다. 그 결과, 본 연구는 다음 두 가지 무용학적 의미를 함축한다. 첫째, 동양사상과 동양무술은 미국의 현대무용발전에 기여한 핵심적인 요소이다. 둘째, 동양사상과 동양무술은 무용의 기술적 측면에 집중하고 있는 현재의 한국 무용계에 새로운 가능성을 제시해 줄 것이다.
Abstract
The purpose of this dissertation is to study the effects of the Eastern thought and Oriental martial art in modern dance of the United States. For this purpose, the study concentrates on the modern dancer of the United States, namely, Ruth Saint Denis, Martha Graham, Merce Cunningham, Erick Hawkins and Steve Paxton. The modern dancers of the United States, as inspired by the famous modern dancer Isadora Duncan, emphasizes freedom and natural spirit in dance. Ruth Saint Denise's Oriental Dance, Merce Cunningham's dance using Zen Buddhism, and Steve Paxton's dance making use of the Oriental martial art Aikido were all influenced by the Eastern thought and Oriental martial art. In conclusion, this study provides us with the following implications. First, The Eastern thought and Oriental martial art contribute to the modern dance of the United States. Secondly, The Eastern thought and Oriental martial art provide a holistic approach to the present Korean dance education, which currently places primary focus on the technical aspects of dance.
