지난 30여 년 동안 스포츠의 이데올로기적 분석에 대한 국내외 학자들의 관심은 증가하고 있는 추세이며, 학자들은 그들이 속한 문화사회에 대한 이데올로기적 분석을 통해 다양한 각도에서 스포츠와의 관계를 규명하는 연구들을 시도해오고 있으나 한국의 스포츠문화를 이데올로기적 시각에서 분석한 연구는 흔치않다. 본 연구는 한국 근대사회의 변화, 특히 일제의 식민지 제국주의의 정치적 환경 속에서 생성된 스포츠 문화의 이데올로기적 중요성에 대해 조사하는 것이 목적이며 이러한 목적을 달성하기 위해 사적고증을 통해 제국주의적 문화의 확산과 민족주의적 융합 등의 이데올로기적 관점에서 스포츠문화를 분석한 연구이다. 구체적인 연구문제로는 먼저, 일제의 식민지정책의 일환인 문화적 제국주의의 도구로서의 스포츠의 기능을 분석해보는 것이며; 둘째, 서양에서 도입된 스포츠문화의 발달과정을 고찰하고 그것이 한국 근대사회를 여행하면서 종교, 교육, 정치 등의 문화적 요소와 작용하면서 어떠한 모습으로 변용되었는가를 탐색하는 것이며; 마지막으로, 한국 근대사회의 내부적 융합과 외부적 자극에 대한 반응이라는 관점에서 스포츠의 구조주의적 기능을 고찰해 보고자 하였다. 다양한 연구방법들이 사용되었는데 이들은 공문서의 분석, 기록물과 2차 자료 등을 분석·연구하는 것과 한국의 운동선수, 교육가 그리고 관련 부처의 공무원들과의 접촉도 포함한다. 본 연구는 광범위하게 선택된 자료들을 토대로 한국 근대 스포츠의 이데올로기적 발전을 탐구하고 스포츠의 정치, 교육, 종교 등과의 관련성을 규명하려는 목적이 있다.
Abstract
Over the last three decades or more, there has been a considerable interest in the historical analysis of sport. While a number of Western writers and cultural critics have attempted to locate the development of sport in various societies within an analysis of their own culture, very few have made detailed historical account of the development of sport in Korea. This study examines the significance of sport within the broader context of change in Korea. Primarily this work is concerned with: proving a historical empirical analysis; treating the analysis of sport as a tool of cultural imperialism; highlighting the development of Western sports and the processes by which sport and physical culture traveled to Korea and contributing to the analysis of sport in Korea through using the nations of imperialism, imperial resistance, cultural diffusion, national assimilation and independent assertion. Nonetheless, the relative strength and weakness of this study may be its attempt to address the interrelated nature of all of these concerns. This study analyses the ideologies which have supported and promoted the diffusion of modern sport: nationalism, imperialism and colonialism. One consideration of special importance to this diffusion has the manner in which Korean society has reacted to external impacts. A major impact, Japanese colonization will be examined to argue that Japanese society used sport as a means of domination to project this argument into the function of sport in Korea. Korean nationalism was very much, but not exclusively, the outcome of Eastern imperial exploitation and is meshed with sport. In this study, surveys on the phenomena of Korean nationalism and what kind of role sport played in this colonial society between 1920 and 1937 will be appropriate.
