동·서무용의 문화적 전용과정과 특성

본 연구의 목적은 동양의 철학적, 종교적 사상과 무용기법들이 어떻게 서양무용에 전이되었는가를 문화사적 관점에서 규명하는 것이었다. 사회적 및 문화적 요소 그리고 학문적 배경이 상이한 이국의 환경 속에서 동양사상과 무용기법은 인지, 수용, 변용의 3단계의 ‘문화전용 과정’을 거쳐서 서양무용의 발전에 점진적으로 영향을 끼쳤다고 할 수 있었다. 다음의 두 가지 결론적 사항이 명료화되었다. 서양 현대무용에 동양사상과 무용기법의 문화적 수용은 첫째, 선택적이고 비판적 관점에서 서양 무용가들은 창조적이며 실용적으로 동양적 체계와 실제를 그들의 무용에 통합시켰다. 이러한 통합의 과정 속에서 동양의 무용기법은 변용될 수밖에 없었으며, 바로 이러한 점에서 동양사상과 무용기법에 근거한 서양의 현대무용은 단지 유입, 전래 또는 확산의 정도를 넘어서는 중요한 의미를 가진다고 할 수 있었다.. 둘째, 지난 몇 십년동안 서양무용 영역에서의 동양사상과 무용기법의 도래는 일시적 현상으로서의 문화현상이 아니라는 것만은 명확하다고 할 수 있었다. 이것은 본 연구에서 주로 다루어졌던 초창기로부터 현재까지의 현대무용가나 안무가들이 서양의 현대무용 발전에 지속적인 공헌을 해왔다는 측면을 고려하여 볼 때 이해될 수 있었다. Denis, Graham, Cunningham과 같은 혁신적인 현대 무용가들의 무용은 20세기 전반을 통하여 서양에서의 일대 혁신을 일으킴으로서 서양무용 역사상 하나의 큰 전환점을 가져다주었다고 할 수 있었다.
Abstract
Purpose of this study was to trace the acculturation process of the context of Eastern thought and practice on American modern dance during the 20th century. An analytical review was made of contemporary literatures on American modern dance relative with Eastern thought and practice. The following findings were articulated as the result of this study. First of all, the first stage, acquaintance, in which Eastern ideas and practice were introduced into American modern dance, characterized as the link of Eastern thought and practice with American modern dancers and choreographers. Second, the second stage, appropriation, in which American modern dancers and choreographers accepted the Eastern approach and technique, characterized as the utilization of dance theory and practical skills. Third, the third stage, transformation, in which Eastern thought and practice mixed into a new mode of pattern and style, were creatively synthesized Eastern and Western skill and techniques by a number of American choreographer from the pragmatic way. Finally, the influence of Eastern thought and practice in American modern dance goes beyond a transplant. It is a transformative process which means a third way of development. In this perspective, those of acculturation process would be contributed to the development of both Eastern and Western dance.
