이 연구는 발터 벤야민(Walter Benjamin)의 아우라 개념을 스포츠에 적용하여, 기술복제와 디지털 미디어가 스포츠 경험에 미치는 영향을 분석하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 이를 위해 벤야민의 『기술복제시대의 예술작품』을 이론적 토대로 삼아 스포츠 경기, 선수, 팬덤 문화에서 나타나는 아우라의 특성을 탐구하였다. 또한 전통적인 스포츠 경험(현장성, 희소성)이 기술복제를 통해 어떻게 변화하고 재구성되는지를 분석하였다. 그 결과, 디지털 미디어(TV 중계, SNS, 스트리밍, VR 등)는 스포츠의 원본적 경험을 확장시키고 새로운 몰입형 체험을 가능하게 했지만, 동시에 전통적 아우라의 희소성과 독창성을 일정 부분 약화시키는 양면적 특성을 보였다. 즉 스포츠의 아우라는 단순히 소멸하는 것이 아니라, 전통적 아우라와 디지털 재현 간의 긴장 속에서 새로운 방식으로 재해석되고 확장되는 과정에 있음을 확인하였다. 이는 현대 스포츠 문화에서 기술복제와 원본 경험이 공존하며, 스포츠가 단순한 경기를 넘어 문화적·사회적 의미를 형성하는 중요한 요소로 작용하고 있음을 시사한다.
Abstract
This study aims to apply Walter Benjamin’s concept of aura to sports, analyzing the impact of technological reproduction and digital media on sports experiences. Using Benjamin’s 『The Work of Art in the Age of Mechanical Reproduction』 as a theoretical foundation, the research explores the characteristics of aura in sports events, athletes, and fandom culture. It also examines how traditional sports experiences — such as authenticity and rarity — are transformed and restructured through technological reproduction. The findings reveal that digital media (TV broadcasts, social media, streaming services, and VR) expand the original sports experience and enable new immersive experiences. However, these technologies also exhibit a dual nature by partially diminishing the scarcity and uniqueness of the traditional aura. In other words, the aura of sports does not simply vanish; rather, it undergoes reinterpretation and expansion through the tension between the traditional aura and digital reproduction. This suggests that technological reproduction and original experiences coexist in contemporary sports culture, positioning sports as a significant cultural and social phenomenon beyond mere competition.
