Abstract

This study aims to present a theoretical framework for applying Zhu Xi’s theory of mind (心性論) to sports ethics. Zhu Xi’s concept of ‘Mind Governing Nature and Emotions (心統性情)’ plays a crucial role in integrating human nature and emotions to establish moral judgments and behavioral standards. The research analyzes the relationship between mind (心), nature (性), and emotions (情) through both structural and functional interpretations of ‘Mind Governing Nature and Emotions’, extending the theory to moral emotions and actions in sports contexts. Based on Zhu Xi’s theory of the manifestation of nature as emotions (性發爲情), this study demonstrates that emotions can manifest either morally or immorally and it proposes ethical standards necessary for maintaining sportsmanship. The findings suggest that the issues of good and evil in sports ethics can be clarified using the framework of Neo-Confucianism, with solutions rooted in restoring innate temperament and cultivating acquired moral discipline. This study contributes to expanding the scope of sports ethics research and highlights the role of sports as a cultural practice that enhances human ethical life.
