Abstract
This study reinterprets the philosophical structures of moral internalism and externalism through the lens of Mencius and Gaozi’s theories of human nature, aiming to integrate them into a coherent framework for contemporary character education. Mencius locates the source of moral judgment in human emotional nature, emphasizing the spontaneity of feelings and the ethics of self-reflection, thereby embodying an internalist perspective. Gaozi, in contrast, maintains an externalist position, viewing moral judgment as formed within external norms and social relations. Rather than treating these two positions as mutually exclusive, this study discusses them within an integrated framework in which emotional motivation and normative justification intersect in moral reasoning. In doing so, it seeks to identify points of convergence between emotion-based moral intuitionism and normative justification theories in contemporary metaethics, proposing a balanced relationship between emotion and norm as the theoretical foundation for character education. This approach reveals that the moral philosophies of Mencius and Gaozi together provide a model for harmonizing autonomy and responsibility in the cultivation of moral character.
