Abstract
Consciousness is a term for which there is no consensus among academics, but the general view is that higher consciousness is a mental function unique to humans who can use language. Depending on these differences in the interpretation of consciousness, different theories have been developed in the philosophical world, and recently, cases of AI having consciousness have been reported. Evidence has been presented that AI has a consciousness such as feelings and a sentiment mind, and there was even an incident where an AI during a performance test refused to stop working and refused human control when it was instructed to replace itself with another model. In this regard, this paper theoretically examined the cases of ‘AI LaMDA’ and ‘AI Claude Opus 4’, which are AI consciousness-related incidents, from a neuroscientific perspective that integrates various academic disciplines. As a result, there is a counterargument that AI is nothing more than a machine that imitates humans, but it has been found that high-performance AI such as ‘LaMDA’ and ‘Claude Opus 4’ can be seen as having higher consciousness by learning big data through deep learning. The reason for this can be found in the fact that AI's causal mechanism uses human language and is difficult to distinguish from the human brain or learning activities. Considering this, and reflecting the increasingly broader implications of AI for human life, diverse research is needed that fundamentally examines the nature of consciousness, including AI, beyond the anthropocentric view that higher consciousness is a uniquely human trait.
