이 글은 17세기 제네바 아카데미 (the Geneva Academy)에서 신학교수로 봉직했던 프란시스 튜레틴 (Francis Turretin, 1623-1687)의 창조론을 고찰하는 논문이다. 그의 『변증신학강요 (Institutes of Elenctic Theology)』에 나타난 다양한 교리들에 대해서 많은 연구들이 진행되어왔지만, 창조론에 대한 연구는 거의 찾아보기 힘들다. 튜레틴 연구의 이런공백을 메우기 위한 연구의 일환으로서 본 논문은 그의 창조론에 나타난다음의 5가지 항목으로 나누어서 살펴보았다. 첫째, 창조의 정의는 ‘무에서의 생성’으로 간략하게 정의되었는데 이는 창조의 직접적이며 이차적 차원을 함께 강조하는 정의에 해당된다. 둘째, 튜레틴은 창조를 삼위일체적 창조로 이해하는 전통적인 입장을 견지함과 동시에 창조는 하나님의 외적이며 일시적인 행위라는 맥락에서 창 조의 시간성을 강조한다. 이 시간성은 구체적으로 6일 동안의 신적 사역으로 나타났다. 셋째, 6일 동안의 창조 사역에 대한 고찰에서 튜레틴은 제4-6일에 발생한 사역보다는 제 1-3일의 사역에 더욱 집중하는 일종의 비대칭성을 보여준다. 이에 대한 이유는 제 6일에 발생한 인간의 창조는 별도의 주제로서 집중적 고찰의 대상이 되었다는 사실에서 찾을 수 있다. 넷째, 인간의 창조에 대해서는 선아담인류론, 하나님의 형상, 원의, 그리고영혼의 기원이라는 주제로 나누어서 살펴보았다. 튜레틴은 특히 드 라 페이레르 (de la Peyrere)가 제기한 선아담인류론을 성경적인 입장에서 적극적으로 비판함으로서 그의 『변증신학강요』가 지닌 변증적 성격, 즉 기독교의 진리를 공격하고 부정하는 오류를 객관적인 잣대로 공정하게 평가하는 신학적 태도를 분명하게 보여주었다. 다섯째, 천사의 창조에 대해서는 천사 창조의 증거와 시기, 천사의 예정, 천사의 지식, 그리고 피조되지않은 천사로서의 그리스도라는 주제로 나누어서 고찰했다. 튜레틴은 특히 그동안 잘 다루어지 않았던 주제인 천사의 예정을 인간의 예정과 비교하여 고찰하는 독특함과 탁월함을 보여주었다. 또한 그리스도를 피조되지 않은 천사로 간주하고 고찰하는 가운데 그리스도와 천사의 관계를 새로운 관점에서 이해할 수 있는 지평을 전개했다.
Abstract
This article is a study on Francis Turretin’s doctrine of creation, who worked as a professor in theology at the Geneva Academy during the seventeenth century. Although scholars have published results of their research regarding various doctrines in his opus magnum, Institutes of Elenctic Theology, it is hardly possible to find results in the area of docrine of creation. This article attempts to fill this vacuum in Turretin research by meditating and presenting his doctrine of creation in following five subjects. First, creation is briefly defined as ‘the production ex nihilo’. Turretin emphasizes the character of creation is not only immediate but secondary along with this brief definition. Second, while Turretin holds fast to the traditional understanding of this doctrine by considering it in terms of the Trinitarian creation, he also concentrates on temporality of creation as it is understood as an extrinsic and transient act of God. Temporality of creation is specifically manifested into the divine work occurring during the period of 6 days. Third, Turretin exhibits alleged asymmetry in his treatment of the divine creation in 6 days. The reason for this phenomenon can be found in the proposition that creation of man would be treated in detail in separate sections following. Fourth regarding the doctrine of human beings, we have divided it into the following four subjects: Pre-adamite theory, the image of God, original righteousness, and the origin of soul. Turretin, in his denial of preadamite theory advocated by de la Peyrere, presented his criticism against this theory in such a fair and objective manner based on Scriptural truth that an apologetic character exhibited in his Institutes could be clearly discerned. Fifth, regarding the creation of angels, we have divided it into the following four subjects: the evidences & the time of the creation of angels, the predestination of angels, the knowledge of angels, and Christ as the uncreated angel. Turretin especially deals with the subject of the predestination of angels, which had been hardly in theological discussion. His novelty is seen in the way he presented his argument specifically in comparison with the predestination of man. Also in considering Christ as the uncreated angel, Turretin provided a new perspective for understanding the relationship between Christ and angels
