Natural Grace and Supra-natural Grace: Similarities between Gregory of Nyssa and Augustine in their spirituality

Considering similarities or differences in trinitarianism in the patristic era, scholars have debated which elements of spiritual theologies of the Greek and Latin Church Fathers were different or similar. Particularly, theologians have been troubled with the issue of how to define the relation between God’s natural and supra-natural grace in the Greek and Latin traditions. For example, the debate between Adolf Martin Ritter and Ekkehard Mühlenberg about Gregory of Nyssa and Augustine of Hippo notably revealed discrepancies in comprehending this relation. While the argumentation of Ritter and Mühlenberg was fascinating, they did not profoundly discuss the trinitarian structure of spirituality of the two Church Fathers in connection with the relation between God’s natural and supra-natural grace. Hence, this paper suggests an alternative view that comprehends similarities in what Gregory and Augustine thought about natural and supra-natural grace. The present work researches trinitarian structure, which is similarly found in their thoughts on the creation and deification of human beings.
