본고에서 헤르만 바빙크의 주저인 개혁교의학의 영역본(2003-2008)에 대해서 고찰해 보았다. 존 프린트가 번역하고, 존 볼트가 편집해서 출간한 개혁교의학』의 영역본이 출간된 이후에 관련된 박사 논문들과 연구 문헌들이 많이 산출되고 있다. 뿐만 아니라 인도네시아어, 포르투갈어, 중국어 등으로 바빙크의 개혁교의학이 번역되는 데 있어서 기본 텍스트가 되고 있기도 하다. 따라서 이러한 영역본이 어떻게 출간되었는지 그 경위를 밝히고, 영역본의 문제점들을 고찰해 보는 것이 필요하다고 생각된다. 본고의 II절에서는 개혁교의학의 영역본의 출간 경위와 편집자와 번역자의 프로필을 살펴보았다. 그리고 이어지는 III절에서는 개혁교의학의 영역본 제1권에서 노출되는 번역상의 오류들과 문제점들을 논구해 보았다. 이런 작업을 할 수 있게 된 것은 개혁교의학을 한국어로 번역한 박태현 교수가 영역본의 문제점들을 여러모로 지적해 주었기 때문이다. 우리는 본고에서 진행된 고찰을 통해 영역본도 수정 보완이 필요하다는 점을 확인하게 되었고, 나아가서는 바빙크 연구자들이라면 화란어 원문에 대한 관심을 좀 더 기울여야 한다는 점을 재확인하게 되었다.
Abstract
In this paper, I examine the English translation (2003-2008) of Herman Bavinck’s main work, Reformed Dogmatics. Since the publication of the English translation of Reformed Dogmatics, translated by John Vriend and edited by John Bolt, many related doctoral theses and research papers have been produced. In addition, it has become the basic text for translations of Bavinck’s Reformed Dogmatics into Indonesian, Portuguese, Spanish, and Chinese, etc. Therefore, it is thought necessary to clarify the circumstances of how these English translations were published and examine the problems of the English translations. In Section II of this paper, I examine the circumstances of the publication of the English translation of Reformed Dogmatics and the profiles of the editors and translators. In Section III, I examine the translation errors and problems exposed in the first volume of the English translation of Reformed Dogmatics. This examination was possible because Professor Tae-Hyun Park, who translated Reformed Dogmatics into Korean, pointed out various problems in the English version. Through the examination conducted in this paper, we confirm that the English version also needs to be revised and supplemented, and furthermore, we reaffirme that Bavinck researchers should pay more attention to the Dutch original text.
