Abstract
Radical orthodoxy strongly criticizes modernity, which claims the autonomy of reason, as being wrong and destructive. The fact that many theologies since the modern era have uncritically accepted secular reason is no different from Christian theology giving up being a metadiscourse. Theology as a metadiscourse that controls all other discourses derives its legitimacy from God’s revelation. As Milbank argues, theologically, reason should be modified within the scope of revelation and under the control of revelation. However, Milbank tends to evaluate modern reason negatively because he emphasizes the importance of revelation too much. For example, he evaluates Heidegger’s phenomenological ontology negatively and fails to see the role that reason plays in revelation in the sense of general revelation. In this paper, in order to show that reason also has a positive role, I will reveal the positive aspects of Heidegger’s ontology, unlike Milbank’s interpretation of Heidegger. In this way, I will reconfirm the place of reason in theology in the name of general revelation. In addition, I will suggest that the right path for Christian theology is to reject the attitude of today’s Christian theology that indiscriminately accepts secular reason, while at the same time justly and precisely criticizing and evaluating secular reason in the light of revelation.
