헤르만 바빙크와 복음 전도 - “과제들: 복음 전도의 개념과 필요성”을 중심으로*

Abstract

The gospel and theology must have ‘expandability.’ The sound way to expand is ‘evangelization’ and ‘missionary work.’ Herman Bavinck(1854-1921), a Reformed theologian who lived in the Netherlands in the 19th and 20th centuries, was also a theologian who emphasized the ‘expandability’ of religion and theology. Bavinck mentioned much regarding the expandability of the gospel in his main book, Reformed Dogmatics, but this study will focus more on Bavinck’s short speech on ‘evangelization.’ Bavinck gave the opening speech at the Conference of the Reformed Evangelical Society(Congres voor Gereformeerde Evangelisatie) held in Amsterdam on April 8-9, 1913. The topic of the speech was “Propositions: The Concept and Necessity of Evangelization”(Stellingen: het begrip en de noodzakelijkheid der evangelisatie). In this speech, Bavinck clearly explains the concept of evangelization through a total of eight short sentences and at the same time discusses in a persuasive tone why evangelization is necessary. Through this speech by Bavinck, it will be clearly revealed what ‘propositions’ must be addressed when evangelizing the gospel. The purpose of this paper is to clearly reveal this. The discussion proceeds as follows. First, the paper will understand Bavinck’s thoughts on evangelization and missions, and then conduct an in-depth analysis of the contents of “Propositions: The Concept and Necessity of Evangelization” in the context of comparing them with the contents of Reformed Dogmatics. Afterwards, based on the previous discussions, the study will conduct some practical considerations and conclude the article by summarizing the contents. Through this series of works, the concept and necessity of evangelization will ultimately be clearly revealed, and it is expected that the theological soundness of the evangelical strategy that the Korean church should adopt in the future will be reconsidered and the correct evangelical strategy will be enriched.
