Abstract

Objectives: This study aimed to explore the potential of artificial intelligence (AI) in addressing the escalating mental health crisis in Gyeonggi Province, particularly after the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: A mixed-methods approach combining literature review and institutional surveys was employed. A total of 21 out of 32 community mental health centers in Gyeonggi Province participated, with center managers or key staff responding to a 16-item questionnaire. Data were analyzed using frequency and cross-tabulation to identify trends in crisis prevalence, service needs, and concerns related to AI adoption. Results: Youth mental health issues, including isolation and depression, were identified as the most critical challenges (40%), followed by child and adolescent problems (27.5%). The most common crisis cases involved depression, anxiety, and suicide risk (34.2% each). Although 66.7% of respon- dents viewed AI as potentially useful, only 28.6% had prior experience with AI services. High demand was observed for AI-based crisis alert systems (34.4%) and chatbot counseling services (25.0%). The greatest concerns included data privacy (20%), accountability for AI errors (16.7%), and system malfunctions (16.7%). Conclusions: Findings highlight both the promise and challenges of AI-based mental health services. To ensure effective adop- tion, Gyeonggi Province should prioritize pilot programs, strengthen legal and ethical frameworks, and provide tailored training to frontline profession- als. These steps will be essential to building trust and enhancing the sustainability of AI-driven mental health crisis responses.
