Abstract

In this article, I read evil through conscience to propose an alternative to Arendt’s understanding of Eichmann’s evil. Arendt’s concept of the “banality of evil” has had a profound impact on society and academia by evoking a number of meaningful discussions on the subject of evil. A necessity for further analysis of evil arises, however, when we consider the evil which comes from conscience malfunctioning in the face of political power. An alternative to Arendt’s analysis is presented in order to raise awareness of conscience losing its proper function as in the case of Eichmann. Prior discussions in philosophy have focused on the clear determination of reason such as “non-thought” or absolute consciousness. Committing evil, however, is not only tied to reason, but also conscience. Making room for further discussions on how conscience – when properly working – can prevent evil, seems reasonable. Much of the evil in our lives may occur due to the “banality” (lack of) conscience, rather than the “banality of evil” based on irrationality as in Arendt’s philosophy.
