Abstract
The article has as its aim an explanation of an politico-philosophical implication of Hannah Arendt's concept of the banality of evil. To denote the unprecedented crime, Holocaust, of Nazis Arendt uses “the absolute evil” and “the radical evil” in her early writings, and “the banality of evil” in Eichmann in Jerusalem. Regarding her confusing use of those concepts Richard J. Bernstein argues that those concepts are compatible to each other. I agree to his view, but it is not enough to show Arendt's original insight for which we need to show how the concept of the banal evil works as a stepping stone in the development of her thought. With the banality of evil, Arendt could answer to the question how we can ask the due responsibility of thoughtless political actors.
