Abstract

The following study examines the current practice and problems of polysemy and homonym of symbolic words in the Korean dictionary, and focuses on providing an appropriate standard for classification. Analysis have confirmed that there were no consistent rules or classification standards for the categorization between polysemy and homonym in the Korean dictionary. As such, there were prior studies attempting to classify polysemy and homonym by morphological characteristics. However, the following study finds that morphological characteristic wasn't a necessary and sufficient condition for the determination between polysemy and homonym of symbolic words. The results of the following study argues for categorizing polysemy and homonym of symbolic words by the principles of semantics. However, if one considers for the practicalities of a dictionary aimed for the masses, the paper finds that it isn't wise to expand the number of homonyms. Using these principles, the following study finds that the standards for categorizing onomatopoeia of polysemy and homonym should be focused on not on the imitation target but on the understanding of the implications of its sound. When onomatopoeia and mimetic word are tied into polysemy, as a general rule, the paper categorized them into individual homonyms. This is a result of the paper's focus on the importance of 'sound' and 'form' in the categorization of symbolic words.
