이 글은 한국어 상징어 사전 편찬 과정의 몇 가지 과제에 대해서 해결 방안을 찾고자 하는 데 목적을 둔다. 상징어를 ‘~하는 소리’, ‘~하는 모양’의 두 가지 상징 영역으로 분류하는 기존의 기술 방식의 문제점을 지적하고 보완하고자 하였다. 기존의 국어사전에는 ‘~하는 느낌’, ‘~하는 상태’, ‘~하는 행동’, ‘~하는 동작’의 기술 방식도 나타나기 때문이다. 상징어의 의미 영역을 분류할 때 하위 영역의 층위 문제에 대해 논의하였다. 『조선말 의성의태어 분류사전』은 상징어를 800여 개의 의미 영역으로 분류하고 있지만 층위가 제대로 설정되지 못하였다. 이러한 문제점을 해결하기 위해서 한국어 낱말망을 검토하였으나 상징어 낱말망 구축에는 직접적인 도움을 받을 수 없었다. 따라서 상징어의 의미 기술 모형을 제시하고 주체와 대상을 중심으로 의미 영역의 분류 틀을 완성시켜 나가고자 한다.
Abstract
This study addresses the question of how we can complement and improve the current compilation process of the dictionary of Korean symbolic words. The main concern of this study is to find out whether it is appropriate to introduce the description patterns such as ‘--hanun nukkim (the impression or feeling that …)’, and ‘-hanun sangthay (the state of affairs such that …)’ in semantic description of sylbolic words. Current Korean dictionaries (almost) exclusively depend on the two description patterns ‘-hanun sori(=the sound that does …)’ and ‘-hanun moyang(-the shape or gesture that …)’ and it is examined whether it is needed to add more description patterns to the existing patterns. Also discussed in this study is the issue of semantic stratum in the classification of semantic field of symbolic words. It is pointed out that the present classification method and criterion for ‘the dictionary of symbolic words’ is not satisfying because they allow the mixing of words in hierarchically different semantic stratum. While discussing aforementioned issues, this study aims at complementing the current semantic description model of symbolic words, eventually proposing a more appropriate model. Constructing the word-net of symbolic words is another task that will be the continuing topic in this and subsequent studies.
