Abstract

This study aims to analyze the changes in public interest and key discourses regarding ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) before and after the COVID-19 pandemic using social media data. The research applied Structural Topic Modeling (STM) to data collected from X (formerly Twitter) between 2017 and 2022 to extract key topics and keywords related to ESG. The analysis revealed a sharp increase in public interest in ESG following the pandemic, with topics such as ‘sustainability,’ ‘reporting standards,’ and ‘political influence’ gaining greater prominence. These findings suggest that companies should incorporate these evolving public concerns into their ESG guidelines and practices post-pandemic. By leveraging social media data, this study provides actionable insights into public perceptions of ESG, offering companies practical data for ESG strategy formulation and supporting policy-makers with concrete insights for decision-making processes.
