Abstract

This study, grounded in cultural ecology theory, systematically examines the challenges and development paths in the transmission of China's intangible cultural heritage, with a focus on the Yao ethnic group's Long Drum Dance (Yao Zu Chang Gu Wu). Employing a qualitative research approach, the study conducts in-depth interviews with 12 participants, including heritage transmitters and key stakeholders, to understand the transmission activities and their interactions with the cultural ecological environment. The research identifies three key challenges faced by the transmission of Yao Long Drum Dance: first, the destruction of traditional ritual spaces due to environmental changes, weakening the ecological foundation for transmission; second, the decline in social support and reduced interest in traditional culture among younger generations, leading to diminished transmission vitality; and third, insufficient resource allocation in cultural policies and excessive commercialization, which limit the sustainability of transmission. To address these challenges, the study proposes three solutions based on cultural ecology theory: first, restoring and innovating cultural spaces by integrating modern education and community activities, creating a multi-layered platform for the exhibition and transmission of traditional dance; second, establishing a multi-tiered support system for transmitters, optimizing living subsidies, educational resources, and career development opportunities; and third, strengthening community participation and social recognition through cultural festivals to boost public support for the Yao Long Drum Dance. This research contributes to the application of cultural ecology theory in the protection of intangible cultural heritage, offering scientific evidence and practical recommendations for the sustainable preservation of ethnic minority cultures and the optimization of related policies.
