Abstract

This study examines the connection and importance of transportation in urban regeneration projects through the survey of the first phase neighborhood urban regeneration projects in Seoul. The study is conducted focusing on seven sites in the projects through examining the sites Urban Regeneration Activation Plans and field studies. While existing studies have mainly been conducted on individual traffic issues and solutions, such as lack of parking, lack of pedestrian facilities and functional conversion of main streets, this study attempts to comprehensively studies the issues related to transportation and reports what projects are actually planned and implemented. The main results of this study are as follows. First, the problems related to transportation are scattered in urban regeneration projects, and various projects to solve traffic problems are planned and promoted. Second, major issues related to transportation within the site include physically narrow and hilly roads, pedestrian safety threats, inaccessible parcels and fire safety, and lack of parking lots. Thirdly, such items as road pavement (slip-proof), installation of staircases and railings, installation of CCTVs and street lights, vitalization of main streets, and operation of parking lots are planned and implemented mainly to solve traffic problems. Consequently, the traffic-related issues are judged to be inseparable when implementing urban regeneration projects that treat physically and economically degraded residential areas. This study emphasizes that urban regeneration project initiatives must be accompanied with appropriate transportation plans.
