교사의 미덕으로서의 필란트로피아: 메난드로스의 『심술쟁이』를 중심으로

본 연구는 아리스토텔레스의『니코마코스 윤리학』에 토대를 둔 그리스 희극 『심술쟁이』를 통해서 필란트로피아의 의미를 분석하였다. 그런 뒤 그것을 그리스 비극『결박된 프로메테우스』와 연결 지어 검토함으로써 필란트로피아가 교사의 미덕이 될 수 있는지의 가능성을 탐색하였다. 아리스토텔레스에 따르면, 사회생활에서, 지나친 아부나 지나친 불친절이 아닌 중용상태는 모자람도 지나침도 없는 탁월한 상태 즉 미덕이다. 그런 미덕을 가진 사람은 스스로의 마음가짐 때문에 상대에 대해 가장 마땅한 방법으로 대하며, 고상한 것과 유익한 것을 기준 삼아 상대에게 호의를 실천한다. 그 호의는 상대에게 상호성을 요구하지 않으며 다만 상대를 이롭게 하기 위해 이루어진다. 이것이 메난드로스의 희극『심술쟁이』의 크네몬에게 고르기아스가 보여준 필란트로피아적 태도라 할 수 있다. 한편 필란트로피아의 근원은 아이스퀼로스의 비극『결박된 프로메테우스』에서 찾을 수 있다. 거기서 프로메테우스는 나약한 인간이 멸망하지 않도록 인간에게 불이라는 가장 요긴한 선물을 준다. 또한 그는 불뿐 아니라 지혜와 기술도 인간에게 전파하였다. 프로메테우스는 인류에 대한 사랑으로 다양한 지식과 기술을 가르친 원조 교사였던 것이다. 이처럼 필란트로피아는 상대방이 잘 되기를 바라는 마음으로 조건 없는 호의를 실천하는 것을 의미하며, 그 호의는 인간을 파멸에서 구하는 선물로서 작용한다. 교사가 하는 일은 인간을 사랑하는 마음으로 지식과 기술을 전달함으로써 프로메테우스적 정신을 이어가는 일이다.
Abstract
This study attempts to explore the meaning of philanthropy through the Greek comedy, the Dyskolos of Menander which is based on Aristotle's Nicomachean Ethics. Also it examines how the Dyskolos and the Prometheus Bound are connected. Then it attempts to show that philanthropy can be a virtue of a teacher. According to Aristotle, neither exceeding flattery nor unfriendliness but the mean is a virtue or excellence because it is neither lack nor excess with regard to friendliness. A man who has such a virtue deals with others rightly in a right mind, and shows a favor toward others according to the noble and useful. Such a favor asks no reciprocity, and only considers the other's well-being. This favor is as same philanthropic attitude as Gorgias shows to Knemon in the Dyskolos of Menander. On the other hand, the origin of philanthropy can be found in the Prometheus Bound of Aeschylus, in which Prometheus gives feeble human beings fire in order that human beings might not be destroyed. He also teaches wisdom and technology to human beings. Thus Prometheus can be called the first ancestor of teachers who are teaching various knowledge and technology with philanthropic attitude. In conclusion, philanthropy is to do a favor for other people's own sake without any condition. That kind of favor can be worked as a gift to save human beings out of destruction. The way of life how a teacher lives is to continue the Promethean spirit by teaching human beings knowledge and technology with philanthropic attitude.
