Abstract
Galen introduces love for humans (philanthrôpia) as a pivotal motive for medical practice and attempts to establish medicine as a ‘philanthropic’ art. The purpose of this paper is to investigate Galen’s conception of love for humans. First, I make clear that while health is the specific goal of medicine, what is beneficial for humans is the general goal of the art of caring for humans. Next, it is shown that Galen’s conception of love for humans has the basic meaning of a disposition to benefit and help fellow humans in adversity, and includes the related meanings of generosity and kindness, but is distinct from feelings of compassion or pity. In addition, it is argued that the key elements constituting Galen’s conception of love for humans are to be found already in the literature of the Greek classical period. This suggests that Galen, who was active in the Roman Imperial period, established a model of the ‘philanthropic’ philosopher-doctor by appealing to the ideas of the Greek classical period. Based on this, I suggest that Galen’s conception of love for humans crystalizes classical thoughts about the goal and function of art (technê) in general. I conclude that it is not simply an anachronistic error on his part to attribute this love for humans to classical doctors including Hippocrates.
