한국불교 중흥을 위한 청주본 명심보감의 불교 이해

중국의 范立本이 1393년 이전에 작성한 것으로 보이는 『명심보감』 서문(청주본)에 석가의 가르침 중에서 좋은 말을 모아서 한 권으로 엮어 ‘명심보감’이라고 하였다는 언급이 있다. 이 말처럼 원본 『명심보감』 서문을 비롯하여 본문에서 ‘方便과 선행, 인과응보, 知足安分’ 등 불교사상과 관련된 내용이 적지 않다. 그뿐만 아니라, 부처님의 慈悲와 功徳을 찬양하는 원색적인 불교 용어와 불교사상이 포함된 내용이 인용되어 있다. 그러나 현재 한국에서 통용되고 있는 『명심보감』 판본에는 불교적 용어를 전혀 찾아볼 수 없다. 이는 조선시대 중기 이후 원본 ‘청주본’이 자취를 감추고 난 후 간행된 ‘초략본’에서 불교적인 내용을 의도적으로 삭제하여 『명심보감』의 유교화를 시도한 탓이다. 그 때문에 현재 학계에서도 『명심보감』의 유불도 3교 합일 사상을 언급하고는 있으나 불교사상과 관련한 심도 있는 후속 연구는 드문 실정이다. 그러므로 본 논문에서는 1454년에 간행된 원본 『명심보감』의 불교사상 중에서 우선 서문에 보이는 불교와 관련된 내용을 발췌하여 『명심보감』과 불교사상과의 관련을 집중적으로 고찰하였다.
Abstract
Some of the preface to the "Cheongj version" which seems to have been written before 1393, by the author of the book "Myeongsimbogam," collected good words from Seokga's teachings and compiled them into a single book. As such, the introduction to the original Myeongsimbogam, as well as general matters related to Buddhist ideas such as "Bangpyeon(方便), Good deed, Cause-and-Revenge, and Jijok Anbun(知足安分)" are cited in the text, and Buddhist ideas that exude the original Buddhist colors of Buddha's mercy and virtue. However, Buddhist terms are not found in the version of the "Mind-in-Bogam," which is currently widely used in Korea. This is because the original "Cheongju copy" disappeared after the mid-Joseon Dynasty intentionally deleted the Buddhist content from the first edition of the book and attempted to Confucianize it. For this reason, the academic community now mentions the idea of unification of Confucianism, Buddhism, and Taoism, but in-depth follow-up research related to Buddhist ideas is rare. Therefore, this paper focuses on the relationship between the Buddhist ideas and the Buddhist ideas in the preface, based on excerpts from the original Buddhist ideas published in 1454.
