초록

This paper analyzed the publication trends of Myeongshimbogam(明心寶鑑) by Fan Liben (范立本) from the seventeenth century to the firsthalf of the twentieth century. In Korea, the Cheongju edition (淸州本), which most closely resembled the originalfirst edition of Myeongshimbogam, was initially published, but after the middle Joseon period, readers began to welcome the abridged version, the length of which was one third of the original version. This led to the publication of dozens of editions. This study analyzed the numerous editions sporadically published throughout four centuries in three phases and came to the following conclusions. The first phase began with the publication of the banggakbon (woodblock printed) version, which was published in the seventeenth century and used until the eighteenth century. This version wascharacterized by its title, Myeongshimbogamchoryak (明心寶鑑 抄略), and by maintaining the format of dividing the book into two parts and leaving the author anonymous. The second phase wasthe publication of the banggakbon from the eighteenth century to the early twentieth century, during which Myeongshimbogamcho (明心寶鑑抄) was commonly used as the book title, and the book was published in one part instead of two, and the author was anonymous. The printed edition became the norm during the third phase after the twentieth century. Commentaries and Korean annotations were added to this edition, published as a complete edition under the title Myeongshimbogam without using “choryak” and “cho,” thus indicating that the book is an anthology. Thi sedition also listed Chu Jeok (秋適) as its author and was mostly published asparallel text versions or enlarged versions. Publication patterns of the first edition and key features of each phase were identified through a detailed analysis. This study confirmed that the first edition changed over time to resemble less of the Cheongju edition and establish itself as an independent book. Furthermore, several versions of the book were newly discovered through this study. TheTianqi edition, published in Tianqi first year (1621, the first year of thereign of Gwanghaegun), was found and identified as the oldest edition of the first edition. Several new editions, including the Jeonghae edition (1647) published in the year of Jeonghae, were also newly discovered, and misconceptions in the academic discourse were rectified. The research and analysis in this study contributed to a more accurate understanding of how Korean readers have received Myeongshimbogam, a work that occupies an important position in the fields of education, literature, and publication.
