Abstract

Universities are energy-intensive institutes. It is necessary for Seoul National University (SNU), the top energy consuming institute in Seoul, to reduce energy consumption for ethical and economic reasons not only as a national educational institute but also as an implementation agency of the Korea emission trading scheme. Inducing building occupants’ behavior change can be an effective strategy to reduce energy consumption and it is essential to understand influential factors that affect energy saving behaviors to derive effective intervention methods to induce behavior change. This research is conducted to analyze psychological factors that affect energy saving behavior of Seoul National University members. Variables consisting of the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) and Personal Norm (PN) are used as independent variables and energy saving behaviors as a dependent variable for this work. Every variable is measured by a questionnaire survey and the relationship between the variables is tested by linear regression. Results show that TPB variables and PN, in general, are useful to understand energy saving behavior of SNU members. Moreover, subjective norms and PN turned out to be significant influential variables on behavior. The model including PN as a dependent variable showed a higher explanatory power (adj. R2=0.325) than the model with only typical TPB variables (adj. R2=0.289). Members of a university share similar external social characteristics. Thus, an approach using psychological variables can be more effective to induce change in members’ behavior ’than the traditional approach with external social and economic variables.
