The purpose of this study is to analyze the capital area defense strategy of Joseon dynasty from amilitary perspective. As the capital defense becoming evermore important,itisrathermeaningfulto take a look atthe defense strategy of the ancestors. The scope of this study attempts to go beyond the current academic trend of the field by including the terrain, military arrangement, training, and defense installations. In addition, this study focuseson the King Injo era during which time the concept of capital area defense first came into use. Since the rebellio of Ih-gwal and the Chinese invasions of Jeongmyo and ByoungjaHoran,the necessity for capital defense was recognized; and with the establishment of Chong-Yung-Chung and Uh-Young-Chung,the concept of capital defense was defined.
